Elevate Your Team’s Expertise
Why We Do What We Do & How We Do It
CPD ENGLISH provides professional, business English tuition with a clear purpose: to help Black and ethnic minority professionals develop, progress and thrive in the workplace by strengthening and showcasing their professional communication.
Many employers explicitly or implicitly link promotion to advanced English or dominant‑language proficiency, with managers more likely to promote staff they perceive as linguistically “polished,” especially into leadership or cross‑functional roles.
CPD English is an inclusive organisation that is grounded in the principle of equity. That’s why ours is the only English and EDI training course that is fully accredited by the CPD Standards Office.
We reward our professional learners with professional CPD points to evidence their commitment to continued professional development. This means employers get better trained staff and employees develop and progress faster. That’s our win/win strategy.
Our unique expertise includes lived experience alongside teaching English as a Second/other language, law, HR, Forensic linguistics and Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging (EDIB). We use it all to design precision tuition that targets the real language demands of specific roles, sectors and workplaces. Each programme blends structured online learning with tailored 1:1 live support so that professional learners can build confidence, navigate complex workplace communication and contribute their full expertise in English.
We partner with individuals and organisations who want more than generic language or EDI training: they want evidence-based, high-level proficiency that is focused on their actual business needs and delivers linguistic and cultural competency that sets their organisation apart from their competitors. “Addressing language barriers is key to fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Employees should never feel excluded due to language differences, as this can lead to disengagement and weakened team dynamics.”

What Are Modern Workplaces doing to improve continued professional development??
Many employers explicitly or implicitly link promotion to advanced English or dominant‑language proficiency, with managers more likely to promote staff they perceive as linguistically “polished,” especially into leadership or cross‑functional roles.
Limited access to high‑visibility projects, client‑facing work or leadership programmes is often justified on communication grounds, which restricts minority staff from gaining the evidence of impact usually required for promotion panels.
Training and CPD offers may not be linguistically or culturally accessible, or may assume native‑speaker fluency (fast delivery, idioms, dense written materials), which can deter participation or reduce the benefit for staff with different language profiles.
-
Black and ethnic minority staff often face a cluster of structural, interpersonal and internal challenges around language that limit promotion, development and retention, even when their actual job performance is strong.
-
Job descriptions and competency frameworks may embed unnecessarily high or vague language requirements (e.g. “native speaker,” “excellent English”) that screen out capable staff and become a justification for not shortlisting or promoting
-
Training and CPD offers may not be linguistically or culturally accessible, or may assume native‑speaker fluency (fast delivery, idioms, dense written materials), which can deter participation or reduce the benefit for staff with different language profiles
-
Constant correction, accent‑based comments or subtle ridicule of “mistakes” can create anxiety around speaking in meetings, presenting or applying for roles, so staff self‑select out of opportunities they are qualified for.
When staff feel they cannot fully express themselves in the workplace language, they may struggle to demonstrate leadership behaviours like strategic contribution, challenge and negotiation, which are often informally assessed in promotion decisions.
-
Ethnic minority staff report lower levels of perceived fairness, respect for individual differences and belief that their organisation genuinely promotes equality, diversity and human rights, all of which are strong predictors of turnover
